In warm-climate areas like Florida’s Treasure Coast, outdoor spaces aren’t something you use once in a while, they’re part of everyday life. Much of the year, evenings are the most comfortable time to be outside, whether that means sitting on the porch or spending time on the patio in the backyard. Even on a chilly January evening, my family and I enjoy gathering around a bonfire out back.
Landscape lighting plays a big role in how those spaces feel after the sun goes down. Done well, it makes a space feel welcoming and intentional. Done poorly, it can be harsh, uneven, and distracting. No one wants a spotlight shining in their face while having a conversation with a good friend.
One of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor lighting is that more light is better. Some companies will even try to sell more fixtures simply to increase the job size. In reality, thoughtful lighting design is about balance. The goal isn’t to eliminate darkness; it’s to guide movement, highlight what matters, and allow the landscape to settle naturally into the evening. This approach also aligns closely with dark-sky principles, which emphasize responsible lighting that minimizes glare, light spill, and unnecessary brightness.
My approach is to look at the property as a whole. Entries, walkways, and gathering spaces are softly illuminated for safety, while trees, architectural details, and planting beds are accented with restraint. The result is a space that feels comfortable to be in, rather than one that feels overlit or exposed. I’ve seen many properties that end up looking more like a shopping center parking lot than a home.
In places where outdoor living happens year-round, this approach isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about creating spaces that remain usable and enjoyable long after sunset.
At Eventide, we approach landscape lighting as a design discipline, not a product. Every property is different, and every lighting plan begins with understanding how a space is used after dark. By focusing on balance, restraint, and thoughtful placement, we create outdoor lighting that feels intentional; enhancing the landscape without overpowering it.
